Welcome

Thank you for your interest in my campaign. I am seeking the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's endorsement to challenge Michele Bachmann in Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District.

The Sixth District includes most or all of Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, Wright, Anoka, and Washington counties, running from St. Cloud, where I live, at the western end of the district, to the north and west Twin Cities suburbs at its eastern end.

I am the first DFL candidate to announce her intent to challenge Rep. Bachmann in 2012. Other DFLers have now entered the race, so we will have an endorsement vote at the CD6 convention in Blaine on April 14. I would be honored to be your endorsed candidate.

I feel this race is a great opportunity, because people already know Rep. Bachmann and what she stands for, so we don’t need to waste any time or resources defining her. This gives us a golden opportunity to discuss the issues people really want to talk about: issues of economic opportunity.

The Occupy movement has launched an important national discussion about how we can redesign our economy to benefit the 99% instead of only the top 1%. I agree with them that we need to enact a sales tax on Wall Street’s speculative financial transactions so that the people who crashed our economy contribute to rebuilding it. I agree with them that we need to prosecute banks that committed mortgage fraud and halt foreclosures by robo-signing banks. I agree with them that our enormous student loan debt burden is preventing our young people from buying homes and starting families and is a drag on our economy. I agree with them that Social Security is a vital safety net that should be defended and strengthened, not privatized. I expect there will be a vigorous debate this year over the size and role of government, and I welcome that debate. I agree with the view that government’s job is to protect and empower all its citizens, not just the wealthiest. In my view that includes building an economy in which everyone can succeed.

I work for a small Minnesota entrepreneurial business that provides consulting and training on workplace flexibility strategies such as flexible scheduling and telecommuting. I've been a long-time community activist on workplace and economic development issues, ever since the days when I worked as a research analyst for the economic development think tank Good Jobs First.

Minnesota has the highest workforce participation rate of women of any state in the nation. As a working mom of three kids ages 15, 11, and 8, I want to see this country lead in every policy area that working families need, because our future workforce and our competitive advantage depend on it.

I've studied what works, in economic development and in family-flexiible workplaces. Now I want to put that experience to work for you in the U.S. Congress.
